Chile spans half the length of South America, but clings to the Pacific Coast. It has the earth’s driest desert, but also the largest glacial fields outside the poles. It has the wonderfully wild Andes Mountains and Patagonia, but also has Santiago, a very modern city. It has endless islands in the end-of-the-earth Strait of Magellan. We were supposed to spend a day in Chile while on a cruise to Antarctica, but the ever changing weather at the end of the continent would not allow the tenders to transport us back and forth.
